Discover the Charms of Karystos on a Day Trip from Athens

When most people think of island getaways from Athens, the Cycladic islands of the Aegean Sea often come to mind. But just a short distance to the north lies the island of Evia, home to the charming seaside town of Karystos – a perfect day trip destination that’s a bit off the beaten path.

Navy Harmony Cruises offers a convenient daily excursion to Karystos, departing from the port of Porto Rafti just 45 minutes outside of Athens. We recently took advantage of this easy day trip option, and were delighted by all that this underrated corner of Greece has to offer.

The 2 hour scenic cruise across the Euboean Gulf was a pleasant way to start the day. As we approached the rugged, mountainous shores of Evia, the port of Karystos and its picturesque harbor came into view. We docked and had about 4 hours to explore this authentic Greek town at our own pace.

Our first stop was the imposing Castello Rosso, an impressive Venetian castle dating back to the 13th century. After climbing to the top of the fortress, we were rewarded with sweeping views over the town, the harbor, and the azure waters of the gulf. It’s a great spot to get your bearings and plan out the rest of your day.

From there, we strolled through the narrow streets of Karystos’ charming old town, popping into local shops and cafes. The town has a delightfully unhurried, laid-back vibe, with plenty of welcoming tavernas, bakeries, and family-run businesses to discover. Be sure to try some of the local specialties like the renowned “fava” dip and the fresh seafood.

Just a short drive from the center of town, we also visited the Dimosari Gorge – a beautiful natural wonder carved out by the Dimosari River. The easy 3km hike through the lush, shaded canyon was a welcome respite from the Aegean sun. Keep an eye out for the historic stone bridges and waterfalls along the way.

After working up an appetite, we returned to the harborfront for a leisurely seaside lunch. Fresh fish, local wine, and classic Greek salads hit the spot after our adventuring. It was the perfect way to recharge before the journey back to Athens.

All too soon, it was time to board the Navy Harmony cruise ship for the return trip. As we sailed away from Karystos, we couldn’t help but feel grateful to have discovered this charming corner of Evia. The Navy Harmony day trip is an affordable and carefree way to experience a side of Greece that many visitors miss.

Whether you’re a Greece veteran or a first-time visitor, I highly recommend adding Karystos to your itinerary. With its picturesque seaside setting, rich history, and traditional Greek atmosphere, it’s a wonderful day trip option that offers a break from the crowds. Sail away with Navy Harmony Cruises for an unforgettable taste of this hidden gem.
