A Day in Kea with Navy Harmony Cruises
If you’re looking for a relaxing day trip from Athens, I highly recommend booking a 1 day cruise to the island of Kea with Navy Harmony Cruises. Their convenient daily departures from the port of Porto Rafti make it easy to spend a day exploring this lesser-known Cycladic island.
Our day began with an 8:30am departure from Porto Rafti, just a 45 minute drive from central Athens. The Navy Harmony cruise ship is a modern, spacious vessel with both indoor and outdoor seating areas, perfect for taking in the views as we made our way across the Aegean Sea towards Kea. The 1.5 hour crossing went by quickly, with beautiful vistas of the surrounding islands and plenty of opportunity to soak up the sun on the outer decks.
As we approached the port of Korissia on Kea, the island’s rugged but picturesque landscape came into view. From the white-washed harbor town to the rocky, tree-covered hills in the distance, Kea has a distinct charm compared to the more famous Cycladic islands. We docked and had about 4 hours to explore on our own before the return journey.
I’d recommend starting with a stroll through Korissia, popping into the local shops and cafes. Be sure to visit the small archaeological museum to learn about Kea’s rich history dating back to the 4th century BC. Then head out of town and follow the coastal walking path towards the ruins of the ancient city of Karthaia. The 3 km hike is moderately challenging but rewards you with stunning views of the island’s beaches and interior.
At the archaeological site, you can wander through the remains of temples, fortifications, and other structures dating back over 2,500 years. It’s an incredibly well-preserved site, giving you a real sense of what life was like in ancient Greece. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there is little shade.
After working up an appetite, head back towards the port and enjoy a seafood lunch at one of the harborfront tavernas. The fresh fish, Greek salads, and local wine make for a perfect mid-day meal.
With full bellies, we headed back to the Navy Harmony cruise ship for the trip home. we enjoyed the ride while relaxing on deck and watching the coastline of Kea fade into the distance.
The 5:30pm arrival back in Porto Rafti left us with just enough time to make it back to our hotel or apartment in Athens, tired but thoroughly satisfied with our day trip to the island of Kea. At under 100 euros per person, the Navy Harmony cruise is an affordable and convenient way to experience this lovely corner of the Cyclades. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for an easy day escape from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
